We have identified six key stakeholders that relates to this bill on childhood obesity. The main stakeholder is Virginia Senator J. Chapman Petersen. We chose him because he is the main supporter of this bill. We also decided to choose the Superintendent of Harrisonburg City Public Schools, Dr. Donald J. Ford. This decision was based upon his overall understanding of the current health within the school system he oversees. Additionally, we chose two Physical Education Department Chairs and a Physical Education teacher because they are the ones that implement the changes to the physical education programs in their schools. The first is Candace Underwood from Lord Botetourt High School in Botetourt, VA. The second is Phil Hudson from Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon, VA. The PE teacher we chose is Joseph Plato from Grafton Village Elementary School in Fredericksburg, VA. The last stakeholder that we decided to contact is Jessica Dawson, Henrico County Public Schools Health Services Supervisor. We chose to contact her because we thought she would have a large knowledge base of the health issues within the Henrico County school system. We tried to incorporate all areas of Virginia, different age levels, and different professions to obtain the best information.
After reviewing the bill, we have found that there are no new developments at this time.

This is a great topic! I think it would be difficult to find someone against this bill. You did a great job identifying key stakeholders who are knowledgeable on the importance of this topic.
ReplyDeleteI was just curious if you knew what "House: VOTE: BLOCK VOTE PASSAGE" means on the status of this bill? Because that is the most recent update on your bill, with 96 Yeas and 0 Nays.
You really thought outside of the box with your stakeholders! You covered all of the bases to ensure there is a wide range of people contacted; not only are you contacting the people responsible for this bill, but also the people who it will ultimately be impacting! Great job!!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great bill to blog about. Many schools (even in VA) have limited PE time. I volunteer at Ottobine Elementary. The children have PE 3 times a week for 30 minutes. I go out there to help exercise with a 203 pound 9 year old. How is the state helping fight childhood obesity when they are cutting PE time? Most kids go home and play videogames, and get no exercise outside of what they get at school. This topic is of great importance right now!
ReplyDeleteSarah, after reviewing the bill we have noticed it has recently passed.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Christina, thank you for your positive comment. We hope that the stakeholders identified will be positively affected by the passage of this bill.
ReplyDeleteGroup 2,
ReplyDeleteWe recognized that PE time has been getting cut around the country and the childhood obesity rates are rising. This was our purpose behind choosing this topic.
